ENDURANCE BICYCLES
An Ideal Choice for Cyclotourism
My experience with Endurance
Over the years, I have been fortunate to have had extraordinary experiences in the world of bicycle touring and countless journeys. I have ridden thousands of miles, guiding cycle tourists through breathtaking landscapes, from the rolling hills of Italy to remote global roads, developing itineraries for clients who share a passion for cycling and adventure. I have also tackled solo trips with minimal equipment, experiencing the true essence of exploration and continually challenging myself.
In the course of these adventures, I have had the opportunity to test countless types of bicycles, from lightweight road bikes to sturdier gravel bikes, and a wide variety of equipment, such as panniers, water backpacks, lights, and GPS devices. Each trip allowed me to gain a deeper and deeper understanding of the needs of the bicycle touring rider, not only from a technical standpoint but also in terms of comfort and practicality. This firsthand experience has taught me the importance of choosing the right means and accessories to deal with all types of terrain and conditions, making every mile traveled a learning opportunity.
Of all the options explored, endurance bikes have proven to be an excellent choice for bicycle touring because of their superior comfort, reliability, and versatility that makes them perfect for tackling both paved and unpaved roads. Through these experiences, I am convinced that the right equipment is critical to turning a simple bicycle trip into a memorable and rewarding adventure.
Why choose an endurance bicycle for travel?
Endurance bicycles are designed with features that make them perfect for cycle touring and long distance riding:
- Comfortable geometry: Compared to a traditional road bike, endurance bikes offer a more upright position, reducing stress on the back, neck and shoulders during long rides.
- Stability and handling: Their geometry provides excellent stability on rough roads and light dirt tracks, making them ideal for dealing with the various types of terrain encountered in travel.
- Carrying capacity: Many models are equipped with rack mounts and saddlebags, which are essential for those who wish to take on bikepacking adventures or multi-day excursions. I personally prefer them in bikepacking configuration.
- Wider tires: Endurance bikes can accommodate wider tires for greater comfort and grip, features that are essential for those who ride long distances. For example, the Trek Domane can fit tires up to 38 mm, a feature that greatly expands the possibilities for use.
The advantage of clearance in endurance bicycles
One of the most appreciated advantages of endurance bicycles is their clearance (the space available to mount larger tires). This technical detail is especially relevant for those who wish to explore not only paved roads, but also mixed terrain and dirt trails.
For example, the new Trek Domane offers the ability to mount tires up to 38 mm, allowing it to safely and comfortably tackle dirt roads, light gravel trails and well-trodden paths. This makes the bike extremely versatile, able to adapt to both long rides on asphalt and rides on less conventional terrain.
Thanks to this feature, I can explore typical gravel routes, such as the wonderful Tuscan white roads, with the same bike without sacrificing the comfort and performance needed for long distances. The option to choose wider tires improves comfort on rough terrain, absorbs vibrations better, and offers more grip on challenging sections.
In addition, now many endurance bikes are equipped with advanced shock absorption systems, such as Giant’s D-Fuse or Trek’sIsoSpeed, which further increase the ability to cope with difficult terrain while reducing rider fatigue. These systems enable longer and more comfortable pedaling, even on uneven surfaces, making endurance bikes ideal companions for long-range explorations and adventures.
Some personal experiences with endurance bikes
In the past, I have tested models such as the Giant Defy Advanced Pro 0, a bike that has accompanied me on several adventures, including a trip through Europe and the legendary North Cape 4000. This bike has proven to be a faithful companion, combining lightness and comfort even on the most challenging days. I shared my impressions of this bike in an article you can read here.
Today I am exploring new roads with the Trek Domane, an endurance bike that is the perfect balance of performance and comfort. With this bike, I am preparing for an upcoming journey where I will test its full potential on long trails, including dirt roads. Equipped with innovative technologies, such as the IsoSpeed system for vibration absorption, and a generous clearance, this bike is designed to tackle mixed terrain and long distances with extreme versatility.
For whom is an endurance bike suitable?
Endurance bicycles are perfect for:
- Experienced cyclists: Looking for a versatile and comfortable bike for long distances.
- Beginners: Who wish to start with a comfortable but high-quality bicycle.
- Bike travel enthusiasts: Who need a reliable vehicle for paved trails and less traveled paths.
