GARMIN VARIA RTL 515
Boost your safety with a smart device
to be more visible and safe while cycling
The test
Today I want to tell you about the latest device I tested on my recent bike trip back home to Sicily: the Garmin Varia RTL 515. We all know how important is road safety and how crucial it is to be visible while pedaling. I have already addressed this topic in a previous article of mine, which you can read by clicking here.
At the end of the article, I have a special surprise in store for you.
Taking advantage of Black Friday deals, I purchased at Bike Store Mugello the famous bicycle radar Garmin Varia RTL 515 and I decided to test it by mounting it on my Giant Defy Advanced Pro 0 During my trip to Sicily. During a few days I traveled hundreds of kilometers between the sea, volcanoes and forgotten roads. It was the perfect opportunity to test the Garmin Varia RTL 515, one of those devices you wonder how you ever lived without.
But what is Garmin Varia and how does it work?
The Garmin Varia RTL 515 is a radar to be installed as a rear light, which connects to your GPS navigator and is compatible with many devices, such as my trusty Wahoo Roam. Una volta collegato, il Garmin Varia will alert you to the presence of vehicles approaching from behind. On the left side of the screen of the Wahoo Roam a vehicle icon will appear, showing you the approaching distance and also beeping. When the side strip is green, it means the road is clear of vehicles. When the Garmin Varia detects an approaching vehicle at a distance of about 400 meters, the strip will turn orange, indicating moderate speed, or red if the vehicle is approaching rapidly. In addition, the navigator will begin to emit beeps, with different alerts depending on the distance to the vehicle. It’s like having a digital rearview mirror that lets you keep an eye on traffic without having to turn around. A simple function that greatly increases the road safety.
The association of the Garmin Varia to Wahoo Roam was a breeze to use, and once you do, you quickly get the hang of it. At first I tried to figure out how the distances displayed on the screen matched reality, but once I understood, I could appreciate the reliability of the device. The Garmin Varia can detect more than one vehicle at a time, and the sound really helps you understand the situation better. In addition, the powerful rear light of the Garmin Varia, visible from 1.5 km away, clearly signals your presence to motorists passing you. This detail impressed me a lot, as I noticed that by drawing more attention, cars tend to Maintain a greater safety distance from cyclists.
One of the biggest mistakes we can make as cyclists is often to not being sufficiently visible. Even during daytime rides, it is advisable to always use rear lights to signal your presence on the road. Initially, I was skeptical about purchasing the Garmin Varia, but when I have doubts, I always turn to Grisorando, my trusted randonneur friend, who has given me his full support.
Visibility and battery life
The Garmin Varia RTL 515 offers different modes of rear light, selectable at the push of a button. You can opt for a more intense light with a different behavior When a vehicle approaches. For example, in steady light mode during the approach of a vehicle, the light will flash rapidly to signal your presence. In night mode, the frequency of flashing increases further when a vehicle approaches. In group mode, on the other hand, the lights will be less intense to avoid disturbing other cyclists. Truly a smart device!
Be visible from a distance of 1.5 km greatly increases motorists’ awareness of the presence of cyclists on the road. Therefore, the Garmin Varia light is much more visible than regular tail lights. However, I still recommend always carrying a backup light.
The Varia’s battery can last up to 16 hours when used in daytime flash mode, and about 6-7 hours in night mode, according to my findings.
Supports:
The Garmin Varia RTL 515 features a compatible mount With different shapes of seat tube. It is important to mount it at a specific height and angle to best detect vehicles and effectively perform its function (everything is explained in the leaflet). Without panniers, I believe the best location for installation is. under the saddle, but to do this of purchasing an extra stand compatible such as this. However, if you need to mount it on bikepacking bags, you may need to find additional supports compatible with your bags. In the future, I will revisit this topic once I have found and tested the right product.
